Conventions
NSR's conventions offer a unique experience to meet Alephs and BBGs from across Long Island while simultaneously learning more about your Jewish identity. Throughout the weekend teens get to participate in unique Judaic electives, Shabbat services, and spirit competitions. Winter and Spring convention provide two unique experiences for teens. Learn more about both conventions below!
convention Steering
Convention steering provides Alephs and BBGs throughout the region with an opportunity to help our Regional Board and Staff plan our biggest event of the year. This opportunity is perfect for anybody who wants to take initiative, gain leadership experience, and learn the ins and outs of convention. Steerers can serve on one of the following committees: Electives, Chapter Spirit, Shabbat, New Member (9th Grade Applicants Only), Tech, Judaic Programming, Promotion and Design, and Grade-Level Programming. If you have any questions, reach out to our Regional Sadranit, Or Bendror, at (516)-996-9056 or our Regional Rakkaz, Chase Nussbaum, at (516)-946-1458. winter convention
Winter Convention provides a unique and rewarding experience for teens all across Long Island to participate in a variety of enjoyable activties. When the teens first arrive Friday, they attend opening ceremonies where they meet the Regional Board and Staff and get introduced to the schedule of the weekend ahead. After this, Alephs and BBGs are given ample time to change into their Shabbat outfits. The Friday night Shabbat service is extremely appreciated among teens throughout the region. After this, teens change into their chapter spirit attire. The chapter spirit activity is extremely different between Alephs and BBGs, but all teens come out of the activity with a deeper love for their chapter and region. After chapter spirit, teens are directed into a "separates" program ran by the Regional Boards. Once again, these programs also differ between Alephs and BBGs. After this, teens are instructed to return to their rooms and get enough sleep to prepare them for the next day. Saturday is jam-packed with tons of activities. Saturday morning, multiple unique Shabbat services are offered and teens get to select which service they would like to attend. After this, many rounds of recreational electives and judaic electives are offered. These electives can range from Candy Sushi to Album Analysis to Menorah Making to more. Additionally, Alephs and BBGs have the opportunity to listen to insightful guest speakers on Saturday. On Saturday night, Alephs and BBGs attend the NSR dance! If teens don't want to attend the dance, there are a variety of other options available for them. The next day, Sunday, is the third and final day of Convention. Sunday is for the region's Business Meeting. At the Business Meeting teens propose motions, which are changes one wants to make to the constituion of our region. After motions are presented, Alephs and BBGs vote whether or not they support this motion. Busniess Meetings provide an amazing experience for teens to get their voices heard in the region! Following the Business Meeting, Alephs and BBGs have to say goodbye to all the friends they made this weekend and begin to start the countdown to Spring Convention!
Spring convention
Many aspects of Spring Convention are similar to Winter Convention, but there are a few changes to the schedule. Teens still attend Shabbat services, recreational and judaic electives, chapter spirit activities, separates, and the dance...but there are some aspects of Spring Convention that are not offered at Winter Convention. One of these activities is the Life Ceremony. At Life, seniors that have either been on Regional Board or served as a chapter Godol/N'siah, have the opportunity to discuss their journies through BBYO. At the end of their speeches, each person picks a younger Aleph or BBG that they can see a passion in BBYO in to "pass their life on to". This ceremony is extremely meaningful for everyone in the region because it's usually the last time NSR's seniors can attend a BBYO event. Another unique aspect of Spring Convention is the elections of the next AZA and BBG boards. Teens from all over the region have the opportunity to run for positions on Regional Board that they're passionate about. After the teen provides platforms and a speech, those voting decide on who would be best fit for this position. Much like the business meeting at Winter Convention, elections provides teen throughout the region an outlet to get their voices heard. Interested in running for Regional Board? Although the teens leave the weekend missing the new friends they made and the seniors who gave life, they're ecstatic for the next programming year to begin!
